2024 Report on Canada's Bird Populations Released
Environment and Climate Change Canada, in collaboration with Birds Canada, has released the 2024 edition of The State of Canada’s Birds report. The document outlines changes in the populations of 463 bird species in Canada since 1970. The report highlights that while many bird populations are declining, some have shown increases attributed to targeted conservation efforts.
The report introduces long-term population goals for native bird species with sufficient data, aiming to track progress in maintaining and restoring these populations. It serves as a tool for reporting on international biodiversity targets, specifically Target 21 of the Kunming–Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The report identifies major threats to bird populations, including habitat loss, climate change, outdoor cats, window collisions, and pollution. It notes that 36% of bird species have decreased in population, while 31% have increased since 1970. Notable recoveries have been observed in waterfowl, birds of prey, and wetland birds.
The report is available on the NatureCounts website, which is managed by Birds Canada. This platform provides detailed information on bird species and supports conservation efforts across Canada.
